The speaker then pauses so that the interpreter can repeat the segment in the target language. No special equipment is required, but since the time needed to interpret each segment is the same as the time needed to first present each segment, the overall time of the event will double.
This service is used for large meetings or conferences. The interpreter listens to the speaker, and at the same time he or she produces the message in the target language. The interpreters work in pairs and alternate every 20 minutes in order to maintain the quality of the interpretation. Soundproof booths are required, as well as receivers for audience members. No additional time is needed for the event. If only one person needs the interpreter’s service, whispered interpreting can be used. In this service, the interpreter sits next to the participants and whispers directly into the ear of the individual who needs the interpretation.
